Page | 20 Non-exempt, hourly employees will be paid their regular pay for up to three full days of emergency closure pay per calendar year. If a closure(s) exceeds three days per calendar year the employee will be required to use vacation or personal holiday benefits to cover the absence. Exempt employees will be paid their normal weekly salary for any workweek in which any work is performed. Given the nature of exempt jobs it is assumed that at least some work will continue (i.e. checking emails, voicemails, etc.) during situations where the office is otherwise closed. However, if that is not the case and a week passes where no work is performed, such individuals will also be required to use vacation or personal holiday benefits to cover the absence or be on unpaid leave. PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND DRESS 307 All employees of the City are responsible for maintaining personal hygiene, grooming and general appearance that is neat, clean and professional. Due to the many types of jobs within the City, department directors have discretionary authority to establish and enforce standards of dress appropriate for the job. Employees of the Police and Fire Departments will wear the specific uniforms provided by the respective departments. Other field employees may also be provided uniforms in order to enhance safety, identify to the public that the employee is a City worker, and present a positive image to the public. Employees are strictly prohibited from wearing City issued uniforms while off duty, and all City issued uniforms must be returned to the City upon termination of employment. In all cases, tattoos which may be offensive or obscene, visible body piercing (except for earrings), and exposed undergarments are prohibited. Facial hair should be kept clean and neatly trimmed. Supervisors have the authority to further restrict clothing or personal grooming attributes that may create a safety hazard. Business casual dress is a privilege and a benefit provided to office employees. The City’s appearance standard prohibits clothing that is unkempt, ostentatious, revealing, offensive, or otherwise deemed to be unprofessional. Jeans in good condition may be worn on Fridays; however, tennis shoes are prohibited. OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT 308 Employees are expected to devote their primary work efforts to the business of the City of Hutchinson. From time to time, City employees may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours. Employees must perform this work when requested. Employees shall inform their outside employer that their duties with the City come first when required to work, including overtime and call-back. In general, outside work activities are allowed, provided that they do not: • Prevent the employee from fully performing work for which he or she is employed at the City, including overtime assignments; • By reason of association, have a derogatory effect on the City, or • Involve organizations that are doing or seek to do business with the City, including actual or potential vendors. In cases of conflict with any outside activity, the employee's obligations to the City must be given priority. WORKPLACE SAFETY AND ACCIDENT REPORTING 309 It is a basic responsibility of all supervisors to make the safety of their employees a high priority. Department heads and supervisors are responsible for properly training employees to safely perform their duties and operate City equipment. Department heads and supervisors must also provide adequate protective equipment for employees under their supervision. Prompt action shall be taken to correct or repair faulty equipment or hazardous conditions in work areas as management becomes aware of them.
